Youth Journalists Broadcast On Citizen Radio
By Fatmata Dainkeh

Salone Times: “The Newspaper You Can Trust”
December 22, 2005

Some members of the Voice of Youth Radio Programme at CMET on Sunday broadcast at Citizen Radio FM 103.7 together with kids of Focus on Children of the radio station. This was in celebration of the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting organized by UNICEF Sierra Leone.

The Voice of Youth Radio programme is a project headed by David Tam-Baryoh, Director of CMET and of Citizen Radio, to train youth journalists in basic journalism and broadcasting, to enable them produce programmes relating to youth and human Rights issues. The programme has been in existence for about seven months now.

Young boys and girls whose ages range from 16-20 years were drawn from different parts of the city to undergo the training which lasted for about six weeks. About 25 of them went through the exercise. They can now produce programmes, some of which are normally aired on Citizen Radio.

When Citizen Radio was contacted by UNICEF to participates in this year’s International Children’s Day of broadcasting which falls on the 11th of December 2005; and since both the Voice of Youth Radio Programme and Citizen Radio are been headed by one person, David Tam-Baryoh, some of these youth journalist were therefore brought over to join the Focus on Children show of Citizen Radio to celebrate the day. Different programmes including a discussion programme on this year’s theme LET’S PLAY, a short skit and jokes formed part of the activities.
